As you can see from the picture, the Volendam docks right downtown. It is only a 2 minute walk to the stores.
We talked to a few seniors who had done this cruise multiple times. It is an easy cruise, the stores are across the street.
For the young or young at heart, there are also canoe adventures, helicopter sightseeing tours, flight seeing by floatplane, gold panning and glacier hiking and climbing.
Check with the cruise line and book shore excursions before you leave.

There are many shore excursions including seeing parts of Chilkoot Trail and Historical Walking tours. www.skagway.com
