Alaska Cruise - WhitePass & Yukon Route Railroad, Whitehorse

Whitepass & Yukon Railroad Route

Day 5 Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada

Whitepass and Yukon railroad route
From train on Whitepass & Yukon railroad route
Take the train ride on the Whitepass and Yukon Route Railroad. This is one of the steepest railroads in the world, go from Skagway, and travel 20 miles to the summit of the White Pass, which is at 2865 ft elevation.

The railroad was built during the Klondike Gold Rush. Take in the breathtaking scenery of mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, wilderness, tunnels etc.

Make sure you have lots of room on your digital camera, as you will find yourself snapping photo after photo of this amazing scenery. On your rail/bus excursion from Skagway to Whitehorse you will see Whitepass, Lake Bennett, Carcross, and Emerald Lake.

The stunning scenery includes mountains, pristine lakes, interesting moon-like landscapes (especially if you travel here in spring), glaciers, and a desert area. You will travel from Alaska through British Columbia and then to the Yukon. You will overnight in Whitehorse, Yukon.

Whitehorse is the capital of the Yukon. Home of the S.S. Klondike, the sternwheeler, which is one of Canada’s National Historic Sites. This is walking distance from downtown Whitehorse.

There are several trails running through town that will take you to S.S. Klondike, the mighty Yukon River, and the Fish Ladder where from mid July to mid August you can see Chinook Salmon pass through on their way to their spawning grounds.

Historic Miles Canyon is a beautiful scenic area just 10 minutes from downtown Whitehorse. If you feel like some exercise the new Canada Games Centre will meet your fitness requirements and is located just minutes from hotels.

There are several tour operators that offer excursions to see sled dogs in the summer and well as winter. Seeing the sled dogs was one of our favorite parts of this entire trip. The dogs were so cute!!! Of course, there is abundant daylight in the summer up north!

If you came to Whitehorse in February you could see the Yukon Quest Sled Dog Race from Whitehorse, Yukon – Fairbanks, Alaska. You might also see the Northern Lights at this time, which is amazing this far north www.visitwhitehorse.com.
